Building an impactful online presence in the behavioral health space is a challenging yet rewarding journey. Whether you are a clinician, therapist, or content creator with a passion for mental health, creating content that resonates with your audience can connect you with individuals who need support while establishing your credibility.
In this article, Nicole will walk you through five proven strategies and practical tips from my own experience, as well as insights from my work with professionals in the mental health space, to help you create and sustain a meaningful online presence.
The mental health field is rapidly evolving, with more people turning to the internet to seek help, advice, and support. Whether it’s finding solutions to personal struggles like anxiety or addiction, or simply looking for ways to improve mental well-being, people often search for answers online before seeking professional help.
This makes it essential for clinicians, therapists, and behavioral health professionals to have a strong online presence. By sharing relevant and reliable information, you can establish yourself as a trustworthy source while also providing much-needed guidance to those struggling in silence.
A strong presence online also allows you to reach a broader audience than traditional methods. Instead of relying solely on face-to-face interactions, an online presence can connect you with people who may not have access to in-person therapy or mental health services. Additionally, this visibility can help destigmatize mental health issues by creating open discussions and educational resources for your audience.
Before diving into content creation, it’s crucial to know who you’re speaking to. If you’re a clinician, counselor, or therapist, your audience likely includes people struggling with mental health challenges, addiction, or seeking therapy and counseling services.
Example: When Nicole worked with Dr. Fared Bonyadi (Dr. B), a well-known figure in addiction recovery, we started by identifying his audience: individuals suffering from addiction and their families. By focusing on the needs of this audience, we crafted content that resonated deeply with them. His social media accounts grew to over 200,000 followers across platforms.
Tip: Focus on the specific problems your audience is facing. Are they seeking help with addiction recovery? Do they need therapy for anxiety or depression? Knowing their struggles allows you to create content that speaks directly to them and positions you as a trusted source of guidance.
Once you’ve identified your audience, the next step is to create content that adds value to their lives. In the behavioral health space, education is key. People are searching for information that can help them or their loved ones overcome challenges like addiction, trauma, or mental health disorders.
Strategy: In the example of Dr. B, we created educational videos around addiction and mental health, answering common questions like “What is addiction?” or “How can someone overcome opioid addiction?” These videos focused on offering real solutions to the audience’s problems.
Tip: Use a Q&A format in your videos. For instance, have a clinician or expert ask a question like, “What is the impact of addiction on daily life?” Then provide an in-depth, informative answer. This approach not only provides value but also fosters engagement.
Live streaming is a powerful tool to connect with your audience in real time, answer their questions, and build trust. Platforms like YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram offer live streaming capabilities that allow you to engage directly with your viewers.
Example: One of the ways Dr. B connected with his audience was through regular live streams where he answered questions about addiction recovery and mental health. This real-time interaction built a strong community and allowed people to trust him with their personal stories and struggles.
Tip: You don’t have to be live every day. Aim for consistency, such as once a week, and use live streams to answer questions, share tips, or provide support. This helps maintain a direct line of communication with your audience and shows that you’re genuinely interested in their well-being.
Creating new content every day can be overwhelming, but repurposing content allows you to stay consistent without burnout. If you’ve recorded a long-form video, break it down into shorter clips for Instagram, TikTok, or Facebook. Share the same educational insights, but tailor the format to fit the platform.
Tip: Take a long video you’ve created about mental health, such as “5 Tips to Manage Anxiety,” and break it into five individual clips. Post these throughout the week with different captions to keep your audience engaged without creating new content from scratch.
Engagement doesn’t stop once you post a video. Take the time to respond to comments, answer questions, and engage with your followers via direct messages. Building one-on-one relationships with your audience increases trust and retention.
Strategy: Nicole, who has built her platform by sharing her own recovery journey, always makes it a point to respond to messages and comments. By answering questions, she not only provides personal support but also deepens the connection with her audience.
Tip: When someone comments on your post, try responding with a personal touch. For example, if someone asks for advice on managing depression, provide a thoughtful reply and suggest resources. Over time, this level of engagement will foster a loyal community around your content.
